About the event

The session will be spent learning a brief history of the race-based trauma African Americans have experienced within academic settings (ranging from elementary school to college experiences). The session will then progress to a discussion about the implications of race-based trauma on African American students’ mental health and what teachers, and staff can do to best support these students.


Learning objectives:

1) Learn some of the historical incidents of race-based trauma African Americans have experienced within academic environments.

2) Learn about the research findings regarding the relationship between race-based trauma and mental health outcomes for African American students.

3) Learn strategies regarding ways to best support and advocate for African American students mental health.
